OSTEORESORB: Bioresorbable amino acid phosphoramidates for bone tissue regeneration

Autografts, involving the transfer of tissue from one part of an individual's body to another part of the same individual, is one of the most commonly used procedures in orthopedic surgery. Globally, approximately two million bone graft procedures are performed annually[1]. However, autografts have major drawbacks, including chronic pain, permanent nerve damage, loss of physiological function, extensive blood loss, and the need for reoperations. Thus, there is a critical need for bone substitute materials that can circumvent these problems and improve patient outcomes. Current synthetic bone materials cannot match the properties of natural bone as they compromising on either mechanical properties, biodegradability or bioactivity, and sometimes all three. We are developing a unique approach (OSTEORESORB) that combines the ease of processability of synthetic polymers with the mechanical properties of natural bone and allows for tunable biological resorption to match tissue growth. Our solution promises to revolutionize the biomaterials field as an innovative material platform that is both cost-effective and scalable, biologically active and resorbable. The materials are processed by digital 3D printing, enabling environmentally friendly, low-scale production with the potential for patient-specific customized implants. OSTEORESORB benefits from a multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, biologists, and clinicians, ensuring a seamless translation from bench to bedside, and positioning it as a frontrunner in the synthetic bone substitute market.
